Duna romaine lettuce is a romaine-type variety selected to tolerate high temperatures well, with an elongated, voluminous head, light green in colour, ideal for spring and summer cultivation.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. longifolia, family Asteraceae. An elongated, voluminous, upright head, with light green leaves showing pronounced, crisp ribs.
Sow from March to August for greenhouse and field cultivation, with a staggered harvest between May and October, spacing plants about 25-30 cm apart.
It has a medium-late cycle, well suited to northern and central Italy; it prefers cool, well-drained soils with regular watering, especially during the hottest summer cycles.
Its excellent tolerance to high temperatures and bolting makes it a reliable choice for summer sowing, when other romaine varieties would tend to flower prematurely.
It shows good resistance to Bremia (lettuce downy mildew); aphids and slugs remain the most common pests to monitor throughout the growing cycle.
Mainly intended for the fresh market, it is well suited to crisp summer salads; the name "Duna" (dune) recalls its ability to withstand intense heat.
Like other romaine lettuces it is rich in folic acid, vitamin B9, important for cardiovascular health, as well as fibre, potassium and vitamin C.
Per 100 grams, Duna romaine lettuce provides about 21 kcal, 1.4 g protein, 2.9 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.7 g fibre. Good source of folate and vitamin C.
