Rustic and vigorous, Lollo Green lettuce gives a voluminous, medium-sized head, with brightly curled green leaves that make it one of the most widely grown varieties in home gardens.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. crispa, family Asteraceae. It forms an open head with tightly curled leaf edges, in a bright green colour across the whole leaf blade.
Sow from February to April under protection and from May directly outdoors, lightly covering the seeds with soil and keeping a spacing of 25x30 cm between plants.
A rustic, vigorous variety, it adapts well to different soil types as long as they are loose and well-drained; it prefers a sunny position with constant, regular watering.
The voluminous head allows for abundant harvests; the soil should stay constantly moist but not waterlogged, to avoid root rot during development.
It can be affected by downy mildew and grey mould in overly humid conditions; aphids and slugs are the most common pests to monitor.
Perfect raw in salads, it also works well as a garnish for cold dishes; its bright green colour sets it apart from Lollo Rossa, both very popular crispa-type varieties.
Rich in vitamins A, B9, C and K, minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and trace elements like iron, zinc and manganese, with an excellent fibre content.
Per 100 grams, Lollo Green lettuce provides about 15 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 2.2 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.5 g fibre. Good source of vitamin A, C and potassium.
