A summer variety of butterhead lettuce, Verdunna forms a voluminous, heavy head with bright blond-green colouring, prized for its excellent resistance to bolting in the hottest months.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. capitata, family Asteraceae. It forms a compact, voluminous head with smooth leaves of bright light green, tending towards blond.
Sow from March to July in a seedbed or directly in the field, transplanting seedlings about 30 cm apart once they reach 4-5 true leaves.
It adapts to any well-drained soil; it is best suited to spring and summer cultivation thanks to its high heat tolerance and delayed bolting tendency.
Harvest about 60-70 days after sowing, once the head is firm and compact; regular watering during hot spells prevents water stress and leaf bitterness.
It can be affected by downy mildew (Bremia) and grey mould in overly humid conditions; aphids and slugs remain the most common pests to monitor.
Thanks to its crisp texture and delicate flavour, it works well both in simple salads and more elaborate dishes; the name Verdunna reflects the typical blond-green colouring of the head.
Like other butterhead lettuces, it is rich in water, potassium and vitamin A, with a very low calorie content that makes it suitable for controlled diets.
Per 100 grams, Verdunna butterhead lettuce provides about 15 kcal, 1.2 g protein, 2.2 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.3 g fibre. Good source of potassium and vitamin A.
