Everbearing Strawberry
The Everbearing Strawberry, also called four-season or remontant strawberry, differs from single-crop varieties for its staggered, extended production: it flowers continuously from April to October, providing fresh harvests for many months instead of a single seasonal peak.
The Everbearing Strawberry Plant
Its botanical name is Fragaria x ananassa (or Fragaria vesca for smaller-fruited varieties), belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a small, hardy, easy-to-grow perennial shrub about 15-20 cm tall, forming clumps of basal trifoliate leaves in bright green.
The simple, five-petaled white or pinkish-white flowers appear continuously, followed by abundant staggered fruiting; the red false fruits, dotted with seeds, have sweet, flavorful flesh.
How to Sow Everbearing Strawberry
Sowing is done in a protected seedbed between late winter and early spring. Outdoor transplanting follows a recommended spacing of about 30 cm along the row and 100 cm between rows, to allow enough room for runner development.
How to Grow Everbearing Strawberry
It prefers cool, shaded or partly shaded spots, with soft, cool soil rich in organic matter. It also adapts well to pot or window-box cultivation, using well-drained substrates with a pH between 5.5 and 7.
It produces fruit all year round as long as temperatures don't drop too low (ideal 20-25°C), starting about 3 months after transplanting, with harvesting every 2-5 days depending on the heat.
Tips for Growing Everbearing Strawberry
It is not afraid of cold: even in harsh winters the above-ground part may die back, but the plant regrows without problems in spring. Periodically removing excess runners and enriching the soil yearly with mature organic fertilizer helps maintain good productivity.
Diseases and Pests of the Everbearing Strawberry
Like other strawberries, it can be subject to attacks by aphids, mites and slugs, as well as grey mold (Botrytis) in excessively humid conditions. Good air circulation between plants and mulching help prevent fungal infections and protect the fruit from contact with the soil.
Properties of the Everbearing Strawberry
Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, the Everbearing Strawberry generally has a more delicate flavor and a more intense aroma than single-crop varieties, due to the smaller quantity of fruit produced at each flowering.
