Everbearing Strawberries flower and fruit in a staggered pattern for much of the year, from spring through autumn, offering repeated fresh harvests instead of a single concentrated crop as in single-crop varieties.
The Everbearing Strawberry Plant
Its botanical name is Fragaria x ananassa, belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a small perennial shrub, about 15-20 cm tall, with basal trifoliate leaves in bright green supported by thin stems.
Five-petaled white flowers appear continuously from April to October, followed by abundant fruiting: the red false fruits, dotted with small seeds, have sweet, fragrant flesh.
How to Sow Everbearing Strawberries
Sowing is done in a protected seedbed between late winter and early spring, keeping the substrate consistently moist until germination. Outdoor transplanting occurs once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves.
How to Grow Everbearing Strawberries
It prefers soft, cool soil rich in organic matter, in a sunny or partly shaded position. It adapts very well to both open-ground cultivation and pots or window boxes, provided the substrate is well drained.
With temperatures between 15°C and 35°C the plant keeps producing steadily; harvesting should be done every 2-5 days, more frequently during hotter periods.
