Wild Strawberries Seeds

Wild Strawberries, also known as woodland strawberries, grow spontaneously in undergrowth throughout Italy, from sea level up to 2,000 meters of altitude. They stand out for their tiny, sweet and highly fragrant fruit, very different from cultivated strawberries.

The Wild Strawberry Plant

Its botanical name is Fragaria vesca, belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a runner-producing plant that reproduces on its own through long creeping stolons, which form new leaf rosettes and roots upon contact with the soil.

The most common and reliable seed cultivars in Italy are "Alexandria", "Mignonette", "Reine des Vallées" and "Baron Solemacher": they produce few or no runners, making them ideal for pot cultivation since they don't take over the space.

How to Sow Wild Strawberries

Sowing begins in February, mixing the seeds with fine sand to distribute them evenly over finely worked soil, which must be kept consistently cool until germination.

How to Grow Wild Strawberries

It prefers light soil rich in organic matter, well worked and soft, in shady or partly shaded positions. It has a shallow, fibrous root system, also suited to terracotta pots or window boxes that aren't too deep but offer good horizontal volume.

Terracotta drains better in cold, humid areas, while plastic or resin containers retain more moisture during hot southern Italian summers.

Tips for Growing Wild Strawberries

Being a very hardy and vigorous plant, it tends to spread via runners: it's advisable to periodically limit its spread if grown in confined spaces. Continuous porous irrigation along the row helps keep the soil consistently moist without waterlogging.

Diseases and Pests of the Wild Strawberry

A hardy, resistant plant, it can still be subject to aphid and slug attacks, as well as grey mold (Botrytis) in conditions of excessive leaf moisture. Good air circulation between plants helps prevent fungal infections.

Properties of the Wild Strawberry

Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, wild strawberries have a long tradition in Italian folk culture and have always been gathered during mountain walks, prized for their intense flavor and freshness.
