The Crovarese hanging cluster tomato is a traditional "keeper" variety, grown for generations to be stored hanging in clusters throughout winter thanks to its excellent shelf life.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate, vigorous plant with good foliage cover and high resistance to disease and water shortage.
Sow in a seedbed between February and March; transplant about a month later, once seedlings reach 15-20 cm in height, in warm temperate conditions.
It needs sturdy stakes, spacing of about 60 cm between rows and 30 cm along the row, regular side-shoot pruning, and careful watering that avoids wetting the foliage to prevent fungal disease.
The oval, elongated fruits, uniformly around 20-25 g, are harvested as whole clusters once the colour is bright, deep red across the whole berry.
Highly tolerant of water shortage and resistant to the main tomato diseases; the thin skin still needs careful handling to avoid splitting.
Its light flesh and thin, less woody skin make it ideal both for fresh eating and for industrial canning; whole clusters keep hanging in a ventilated spot until late winter for fresh sauces year-round.
Rich in lycopene, vitamin C and potassium, Crovarese tomato retains good nutritional properties even after months of cluster storage.
