Blue ribbed tomato is a ribbed variety with dark violet shoulders rich in anthocyanins, standing out for its unusual look and intense flavour.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A vigorous indeterminate plant, typical of ribbed slicing varieties.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant in April-May, with sunny exposure to enhance colouring.
Requires sturdy staking and intense sun exposure, which favours the development of the anthocyanins responsible for the blue-violet shoulders.
The large ribbed fruits keep dark shoulders even at ripeness while the base turns red; harvest once colouring is complete.
Like other large-fruited varieties, it benefits from good canopy ventilation to prevent fungal diseases.
A striking slicing variety, ideal for mixed salads with a distinctive colour and gourmet plates with other coloured tomatoes.
Rich in anthocyanins, lycopene and vitamin C, blue ribbed tomato has antioxidant properties superior to traditional varieties.
