Nerondo tomato is a round-fruited variety with dark skin, a distinctive brownish-purple colour that clearly sets it apart from traditional red tomatoes.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate, fairly vigorous plant, with good tolerance to high summer temperatures.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant into the field or pots from April to May.
Staked cultivation with regular watering; direct sun exposure encourages the development of the characteristic dark skin colouring.
The round fruit, about 150-180 g, shows brownish-green skin with purple hints and sweet, dark red flesh.
Like other dark-skinned varieties, it benefits from light shading during the hottest hours to prevent sunscald on exposed fruit.
Excellent eaten fresh in slices, where the contrast between dark skin and sweet flesh makes it striking on the table too.
Rich in anthocyanins (in addition to lycopene) thanks to its dark pigmentation, Nerondo tomato has a particularly interesting antioxidant profile.
