Homestead super giant tomato is an American extra-large variety developed for hot, humid climates, valued for its productivity even under difficult conditions.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A semi-determinate, compact plant with excellent fruit set even in intense heat.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant into the field from April-May, in sunny spots.
It tolerates high temperatures and humidity well, keeping good fruit set where other varieties struggle; regular watering supports its large fruit size.
Fruits can reach and exceed 300 g, round and firm, with tough skin also suited to handling and transport.
Historically bred for resistance to fusarium wilt and some disorders typical of Florida's hot, humid climate.
Excellent eaten fresh in slices, thanks to its abundant, juicy flesh, and good for making juices.
Rich in lycopene and vitamin C, Homestead tomato has antioxidant properties and a sweet, well-balanced flavour.
