San Marzano Old Selection tomato is the original variety from which modern commercial selections derive: slim, elongated fruit with intense flavour and a long tradition in the Sarno-Nocera area.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A tall, rustic indeterminate plant, like the historic crops of the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant into the field from April-May, with sturdy vertical staking.
It prefers the fertile alluvial soils typical of its area of origin, with regular watering and balanced fertilising.
The slim, elongated fruit, about 70-90 g, keeps firm skin and few seeds, typical of the historic selection.
Like other San Marzano selections, monitor for downy mildew and fusarium wilt in more humid seasons.
Ideal for sauces and preserves following the traditional Campanian recipe, thanks to its compact, low-water flesh.
Rich in lycopene and vitamin C, San Marzano Old Selection tomato has antioxidant properties and a sweet, mildly tangy taste.
