Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica is a medium-cycle hybrid, very similar in shape and colour to October Roman broccoli, but with a longer maturation period. Its colouring tends toward bright green and its shape is the classic Roman broccoli pyramid. It is also called "Christmas broccoli" because harvest typically falls in December, at the heart of the cold season.

The Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica plant

Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. italica, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The Veronica variety develops heads with the characteristic pyramid shape, bright green, and tolerates discolouration well, keeping an attractive appearance even with climate variation during maturation.

Being a medium-cycle variety with later maturation than the October type, Veronica is among the varieties designed to extend the Roman broccoli harvest season into December.

How to sow Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Sowing takes place in seed trays, burying the seeds about half a centimeter deep in soft, well-drained soil. Transplanting into open ground happens once the seedlings have developed 4-5 true leaves, with a spacing of at least 50 centimeters between plants to allow regular head development.

How to grow Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Veronica broccoli prefers fertile, loose, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Watering should be regular, avoiding waterlogging that favours root rot. Balanced fertilizing, applied before transplanting, supports head development through to full winter maturity.

Harvest is done by cutting off the whole head with a sharp knife while the inflorescence is still compact and tightly closed, typically in December in most growing areas.

Tips for growing Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Being a winter-harvest variety, it's helpful to protect plants with a floating row cover on nights with particularly hard frost, to preserve the compactness and bright colour typical of this variety until harvest time.

Diseases and pests of Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Like other Roman broccoli varieties, it can be subject to attacks by cabbage white caterpillars and cutworms, controllable with Bacillus thuringiensis treatments, and to whitefly and aphids, kept in check with natural garlic or nettle macerates. Good crop rotation helps prevent the main fungal diseases of Cruciferae.

Properties of Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica

Roman broccoli Christmas Veronica retains all the beneficial properties typical of this vegetable: rich in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidant compounds, with a good supply of calcium and potassium. Its low calorie content makes it ideal for a balanced diet during the winter months.
