Roman broccoli San Giuseppe Pomezio is a late-cycle variety, requiring a long growing period before harvest. It is a vigorous plant, able to grow well even in harsh weather conditions such as cold and frost, with the classic pyramid shape and bright green colour.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. italica, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae), like the whole "San Giuseppe" broccoli group typical of the Lazio countryside. Pomezio stands out for its plant vigour and its resistance to low temperatures, making it suited to a long growing cycle and harvests in the depths of winter.
Being a late variety, Pomezio takes longer than other cultivars to complete its development, but this allows for compact heads of good size even after prolonged cold spells.
Sowing takes place in seed trays in late summer, burying the seeds about half a centimeter deep in soft, well-drained soil. Transplanting into open ground takes place between September and October, once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves, with a spacing of at least 50 centimeters between plants.
Pomezio broccoli prefers fertile, loose, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Being a vigorous, hardy variety, it tolerates frost and cold winter climates well, but still benefits from well-prepared, fertilized soil before transplanting.
Watering should stay regular but moderate, avoiding waterlogging especially during the rainiest months. Given its late cycle, harvest takes place in the depths of winter, cutting off the whole head once the inflorescence is compact and tightly closed.
Thanks to its vigour, this variety tolerates intense cold well, but in areas with particularly severe frost an additional floating row cover is still useful. Given its long cycle, it is important to keep the soil free of weeds for the entire growing period.
Like other Roman broccoli varieties, it can be subject to attacks by cabbage white caterpillars and cutworms, controllable with Bacillus thuringiensis treatments, and to whitefly and aphids, kept in check with natural garlic or nettle macerates. The long winter cycle naturally reduces pressure from many pests typical of the warm season.
Roman broccoli San Giuseppe Pomezio retains all the beneficial properties typical of this vegetable: rich in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidant compounds, with a good supply of calcium and potassium. Its low calorie content makes it ideal for a balanced diet, particularly suited to winter soups and stews.
