Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli

Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli is an early variety, with a small, medium-green, elongated inflorescence of loose compactness and visible bracts. After the main head is cut, the plant regrows, producing numerous small, tender and tasty side shoots.

The Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli Plant

Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. cymosa, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). It is a medium-tall, vigorous plant with jagged-edged leaves, particularly appreciated for its excellent ability to regrow after harvest.

Its growing cycle is very early: the optimal growth temperature ranges between 18°C and 20°C, while below 7°C the plant suffers.

How to Sow Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli

Sowing takes place outdoors, directly in the garden, from May to July, once minimum temperatures are steadily above 10°C. Sow 2-3 seeds per station about 1 centimeter deep, every 40-50 centimeters, thinning out the weaker seedlings after germination.

How to Grow Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli

Calabrese sprouting broccoli prefers medium-textured, fertile, cool, deep, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, in a sunny position sheltered from wind. It pairs well with cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes, while it should be kept away from onions and fennel.

Watering should stay regular, especially during dry periods, avoiding waterlogging. Harvest when the florets of the head are still tightly closed and compact, cutting the plant at the base and leaving a few protective leaves.

Tips for Growing Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli

After the main head is cut, the plant keeps producing side shoots for several weeks: a supportive fertilization is therefore advisable to sustain this second production phase. With staggered monthly sowings, harvest can be spread out from December to February.

Diseases and Pests of calabrese sprouting broccoli

Like other cabbage broccoli varieties, it can be subject to attacks by cabbage white caterpillars and cutworms, controllable with Bacillus thuringiensis treatments, and to whitefly and aphids, kept in check with natural garlic or nettle macerates. It is important to constantly remove weeds, which compete for resources and can be a source of disease.

Properties of calabrese sprouting broccoli
