White Fiocco Cauliflower is a late F1 hybrid variety, recommended for late-winter harvests. It stands out for its fine-grained white head, averaging 1.2-1.5 kg in weight, well protected by abundant foliage.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The plant is vigorous, with leaves that provide excellent coverage of the head, protecting it from cold and harsh weather typical of its winter harvest period.
Being a late variety, the cycle from transplant to harvest is quite long, requiring 150-180 days. Transplanting should be timed so that the head matures during late winter.
White fiocco cauliflower prefers medium-textured, cool, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Thanks to its long growing cycle, it withstands winter cold well, but needs regular irrigation in the early growth stages to support healthy plant development.
Harvest when the florets of the head are still tightly closed and compact, cutting plants at the collar and leaving a few protective leaves.
Given its long time in the field, it is important to keep the soil free of weeds throughout the growing cycle. Respect transplanting distances (50-60 cm along the row, 60-80 cm between rows), wider for late, more vigorous varieties like this one.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by downy mildew and bacterial diseases, favoured by prolonged humidity. Cabbage white caterpillars are the most common pests: good weed control and targeted Bacillus thuringiensis treatments help keep them in check.
White fiocco cauliflower is low in calories yet highly nutritious, rich in vitamin C, fibre and minerals such as potassium and phosphorus. It is an ideal food for the winter diet, when fresh seasonal vegetables are especially valuable.
