Orange Cauliflower

Orange Cauliflower is an original, colourful variety, born from a natural genetic mutation discovered in the 1970s in a Canadian field. The head, a bright orange colour, keeps its hue even after cooking.

The Orange Cauliflower Plant

Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The orange colouring comes from beta-carotene in the plant tissues, the same substance that colours carrots. The plant has a globe-domed shape, medium size, with a specific weight of about 1 kg.

How to Sow Orange Cauliflower

Transplanting is generally done from June to September, for a harvest that takes place after around 80-85 days. Its early growing cycle makes it suited to summer and autumn crops.

How to Grow Orange Cauliflower

Orange cauliflower prefers medium-textured, cool, deep, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. It prefers cool, humid areas free of frost, with an optimal growing temperature between 15 and 18°C.

The foliage is fairly dense, but still allows easy harvesting of the head, done by cutting plants at the collar when the florets are still tightly closed and compact.

Tips for Growing Orange Cauliflower

Respect transplanting distances (50-60 cm along the row, 60-80 cm between rows) to encourage even head development. Feed with well-rotted manure or compost in autumn-winter, preparing the soil well ahead of transplanting.

Diseases and Pests of orange cauliflower

Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by downy mildew, a fungal disease that develops on leaves under warm, humid conditions, typically in June. Cabbage white caterpillars are the most common pests: targeted Bacillus thuringiensis treatments help keep them in check.

Properties of orange cauliflower

Orange cauliflower is rich in vitamins and minerals, with a beta-carotene content — a precursor of vitamin A — higher than white varieties. Delicious oven-baked after boiling, with béchamel sauce and diced ham.
