The Pepinex long cucumber is a Dutch parthenocarpic variety highly valued for its steady productivity and long, straight fruits, suitable for both outdoor home vegetable gardens and small amateur tunnels.
Cucumis sativus Pepinex belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a vigorous climbing plant, with hairy stems rich in tendrils that develop quickly, able to produce fruit without pollination thanks to its parthenocarpic nature.
In home gardens, direct sowing takes place from May to June, once the soil is well warmed, burying seeds 2 centimetres deep and spacing seedlings at least 50 centimetres apart.
For good yield in open field it is advisable to set up vertical staking with netting or canes, so fruits are kept off the ground and easier to harvest. The soil should be kept consistently moist with regular watering, avoiding wetting the foliage, which favours fungal diseases.
Outdoors it is important to mulch the soil to control weeds and maintain constant moisture. Harvesting should be done regularly, every 2-3 days, to encourage the plant to produce new fruit and maintain the quality of those already picked.
Outdoors, Pepinex cucumber can be subject to powdery mildew, downy mildew and aphid infestations, especially in particularly rainy seasons. Good air circulation between plants and proper crop rotation help prevent the main plant diseases.
Thanks to its crisp, non-bitter flesh, Pepinex cucumber is ideal for fresh consumption in salads, but also lends itself well to cold sauces and refreshing cucumber-and-mint based drinks.
Composed of over 90% water, Pepinex cucumber is an extremely refreshing, low-calorie vegetable, a source of potassium and vitamin K, particularly suited to light summer diets.
Per 100 grams, Pepinex cucumber provides about 13 kcal, 0.7 g protein, 2.2 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 1.7 g), 0.1 g fat and 0.5 g fibre. It has a good potassium content (about 147 mg) and vitamin K (about 16 mcg).
