The Tasty Green long cucumber is a monoecious "Japanese type" hybrid, early and extremely productive. The fruits are long (30-40 cm) and narrow (3.5-4 cm), dark green in colour with a slightly ridged surface and small white spines.
Cucumis sativus Tasty Green belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a strong, vigorous plant, notably rustic, especially suited for open-field cultivation. Thanks to the "burpless" character typical of the Japanese type, the fruits are particularly digestible and free of the bitter aftertaste.
Sowing takes place from March to April in a protected seedbed, transplanting seedlings in late April-May, or directly in the field from May, burying seeds 2 centimetres deep.
To obtain straight, clean fruits it is advisable to stake seedlings from the early growth stages. The soil should be kept constantly moist, which encourages the production of female flowers; drip irrigation is preferable, as it avoids wetting the leaves and reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
Constantly remove weeds, which host numerous pests, possibly using mulching to keep them in check. Cucumber does not tolerate overly saline water, so attention should be paid to irrigation water quality, watering preferably during the cooler hours of the day.
The variety shows intermediate resistance (IR) to Pseudoperonospora cubensis (downy mildew) and Podosphaera xanthii (powdery mildew), making it more tolerant than other varieties. It remains advisable to monitor for aphids, especially in the warmer months.
Thanks to its sweet, digestible flesh, Tasty Green cucumber is perfect for fresh consumption in single or mixed salads. The "burpless" character, typical of Eastern varieties, makes it an ideal choice for those who experience digestive discomfort with traditional cucumbers.
Thanks to its high water content, Tasty Green cucumber has diuretic, detoxifying and refreshing properties, also benefiting the kidneys. It contains tartaric acid, which can hinder the conversion of carbohydrates into fat, which is why it is often recommended in diets.
Per 100 grams, Tasty Green cucumber provides about 13 kcal, 0.7 g protein, 2.3 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 1.7 g), 0.1 g fat and 0.6 g fibre. It has a good vitamin C and potassium content (about 145 mg).
