The Regina pickling cucumber is considered the go-to variety for anyone who wants to make homemade pickled gherkins. The plant is very vigorous and productive, but the fruits stay very small: they should be picked at a maximum of 5-8 centimetres in length.
Cucumis sativus Regina belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is an early-cycle plant, vigorous and highly resistant to leaf diseases. The fruits are cylindrical, short, light green with small dark spines, with firm, compact, non-watery flesh, ideal for keeping crispness after vinegar preservation.
Sowing takes place from April to June directly in the open field, or in a protected seedbed from March to bring production forward. Seeds should be buried about 2 centimetres deep.
It prefers open-field cultivation, in fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny position. Watering must be regular to keep the soil constantly moist, favouring fast and uniform development of the small fruits.
Being a gherkin variety, it requires almost daily harvesting to prevent the fruits from growing too large and losing the characteristics ideal for vinegar preservation. Constant monitoring of the plant is therefore essential throughout the production period.
Regina cucumber stands out for excellent natural resistance to the main leaf diseases. It remains advisable to monitor for aphids and, in more humid seasons, the first signs of powdery or downy mildew.
Thanks to its firm, compact flesh, Regina cucumber is perfect for making homemade pickled gherkins, keeping its crispness even after months of storage. It is one of the most sought-after varieties for those who enjoy homemade preserves.
Rich in water and low in calories, Regina cucumber is a refreshing, digestible vegetable, a source of potassium and vitamin K. Vinegar preservation enhances its shelf life while keeping many of its nutritional characteristics intact.
Per 100 grams of fresh product, Regina cucumber provides about 12 kcal, 0.7 g protein, 2.1 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 1.5 g), 0.1 g fat and 0.7 g fibre. It has a good potassium content (about 140 mg) and vitamin K.
