Snack Cucumber

The snack cucumber, also called mini or baby cucumber, is a small-sized variety reaching 7-8 centimetres at full ripeness. It has a sweeter taste and crisper flesh than traditional cucumbers, ideal for eating whole as a snack.

The Snack Cucumber Plant

Cucumis sativus snack type belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a climbing or creeping plant depending on whether a stake is provided, highly productive and easy to grow. The fruits have smooth, spineless dark green skin and compact, seedless flesh.

How to Sow Snack Cucumber

Sowing takes place in spring, once frost risk has passed and the soil has warmed to about 18-21°C, either directly in the field or in pots for growing on balconies and terraces.

How to Grow Snack Cucumber

It prefers well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It requires regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist, while avoiding waterlogging. It is also suited to small spaces thanks to the possibility of pot cultivation.

Tips for Snack Cucumber

Harvesting should be done once fruits reach the desired size, generally 50-70 days after transplanting. To maintain steady production it is advisable to harvest frequently, not letting fruits grow beyond 8 centimetres.

Diseases and Pests of Snack Cucumber

Like other cucumber varieties, it can be subject to powdery mildew and downy mildew in conditions of high humidity, as well as aphid infestations. Good ventilation, especially in balcony cultivation, helps prevent the main plant diseases.

Uses and Curiosities of Snack Cucumber

Thanks to its small size and seedless flesh, snack cucumber can be eaten straight after harvest without peeling, exactly like a snack. It is perfect for appetizers and tasty starters, as well as a healthy treat for children.

Properties of Snack Cucumber

Rich in water and low in calories, snack cucumber has diuretic, detoxifying and refreshing properties, also benefiting the kidneys. It contains tartaric acid, which helps inhibit the conversion of carbohydrates into fat, making it suitable for diets.
