The Pepinex Long Cucumber is a Dutch parthenocarpic hybrid variety, early and highly productive. The fruits, which exceed 25 cm in length, have smooth, slightly ridged dark green skin and crisp, easily digestible flesh.
Its botanical name is Cucumis sativus, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. Being a parthenocarpic variety, it produces fruit without the need for pollination, making it ideal for greenhouse cultivation.
Sow in a protected seedbed between February and April, then transplant the seedlings once the first two true leaves appear, or sow directly in the open field between April and June, about 2 cm deep.
It prefers fertile, cool, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. Being a climbing plant, it benefits from stakes or vertical netting up to 150 cm tall, which makes harvesting easier and limits collar rot.
Watering must be regular and abundant, given the species' high water requirement, while avoiding waterlogging.
Greenhouse cultivation protects against low temperatures, which are very harmful to fruit-set. It is advisable to harvest the fruits while the skin is still firm and taut, avoiding letting them exceed the optimal size, which would compromise quality.
Like other cucurbits, it can be affected by powdery mildew, downy mildew and aphid infestations. Good greenhouse ventilation and preventive copper treatments help prevent the main plant diseases.
Rich in water (over 90%) and very low in calories, cucumber is a refreshing, detoxifying vegetable, a source of potassium and vitamin K, ideal for light summer diets.
