A compact head with a very tender heart characterises Verdunna, one of the most widely grown butterhead varieties in home gardens for its delicate texture and sweet flavour.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. capitata, family Asteraceae. Smooth light green outer leaves, a tender crisp inner heart, forming a well-closed, medium-sized head.
Sow in a protected seedbed from February for the earliest transplants, continuing until July for staggered harvests, spacing about 30x30 cm.
It needs soft, well-drained soil rich in organic matter; frequent but light watering helps the head close evenly.
Harvest as soon as the head is well formed and firm to the touch, to prevent it from overripening and losing crispness.
Watch for slugs and aphids in the early growth stages; waterlogging can lead to collar rot or downy mildew.
Its tender heart is particularly well suited to delicate salads, even for children, thanks to the absence of bitterness typical of this variety.
Rich in water and low in calories, it provides good amounts of potassium, vitamin A and folate, useful for a light, refreshing diet.
Per 100 grams, Verdunna butterhead lettuce provides about 14 kcal, 1.2 g protein, 2.1 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.2 g fibre. Good source of folate and potassium.
