A plant with excellent specific weight and a wide, rounded base, Red Barba dei Frati has thick, glossy foliage that tolerates tip burn, the leaf edge necrosis, well.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. crispa, family Asteraceae. The head stays open for a long time, with leaf blistering that decreases in summer and leaves showing reddish-purple shading.
Sow in succession from March for a cycle of about 30 days in spring, extending up to 70 days for autumn sowings.
It grows particularly well alongside cauliflower; it prefers soils rich in organic matter, with good moisture retention during the summer months.
The shortest harvest time applies to cut-and-come-again harvesting; after cutting, the plant regrows quickly, allowing repeated harvests from the same head.
Its good tip burn tolerance makes it less prone to calcium-deficiency stress; aphids and slugs remain the main pests to monitor.
Suitable for diabetic diets thanks to its very low calorie content, it can be eaten on its own or mixed with other cut-and-come-again salads.
It contains very few calories and is very rich in mineral salts; the reddish-purple shading indicates a good content of antioxidant anthocyanins.
Per 100 grams, Red Barba dei Frati lettuce provides about 15 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 2.2 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.4 g fibre. Good source of iron and potassium.
