A very compact, productive variety, Green Barba dei Frati forms a medium-sized head with pointed leaf tips, particularly rich in iron, potassium and B vitamins.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. crispa, family Asteraceae. A compact head with elongated, narrow, toothed and pointed leaves, in uniform intense green.
Sow in succession throughout the year; harvest about 35 days after transplanting, with the plant regrowing quickly after each cut.
Thanks to its compactness, it also adapts well to small gardens or container growing, while still maintaining good yield per plant.
Its strong regrowth ability after cutting makes it one of the most productive cut-and-come-again lettuces; regular watering favours quick, tender regrowth.
Watch for slugs and aphids, especially on tender regrowth after cutting; downy mildew can appear in overly humid conditions.
These salads have a very low calorie content as they are mostly made of water; their good fibre content helps support healthy digestion.
Rich in carotenoids, iron, potassium and vitamins A, B2 and C; its fibre content makes it useful for digestive regularity as well as a light diet.
Per 100 grams, Green Barba dei Frati lettuce provides about 14 kcal, 1.2 g protein, 2.0 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.3 g fibre. Good source of iron and vitamin C.
