A historic variety of Spanish origin, Maravilla de Verano forms a large, tightly closed head with blistered outer leaves and jagged edges, particularly prized for its resistance to summer heat.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. capitata, family Asteraceae. A voluminous head with a light, tightly closed heart, with green blistered outer leaves slightly wavy at the edges.
Sow in a protected seedbed or directly in the field from April to July, transplanting at a spacing of about 30x30 cm between plants.
It requires soil rich in organic matter and well-drained, with regular watering during the hottest periods to keep the head turgid and crisp.
Its name, meaning "summer marvel", highlights its particular suitability for summer sowing, when many other lettuce varieties would tend to bolt early.
It can be affected by collar rot in overly humid soil conditions; aphids and slugs are the most common pests to monitor.
Ideal for summer salads, it pairs well with ripe tomatoes, red onion and olives; its historic popularity makes it a variety still sought after by home growers.
Rich in water, fibre and mineral salts such as potassium and calcium, as well as vitamins A, C and folate, particularly suited to light summer diets.
Per 100 grams, Maravilla de Verano batavia lettuce provides about 15 kcal, 1.2 g protein, 2.2 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.3 g fibre. Good source of potassium and folate.
