With lobed leaves resembling an oak leaf, Red Oak Leaf lettuce owes its intense colour to anthocyanin pigments, which become more vivid as autumn temperatures drop. It's one of the most ornamental cut-and-come-again lettuces in the garden.
Lactuca sativa var. crispa, red oak leaf type, forms a loose head with deeply cut leaves resembling an oak frond. The bronze-red colouring is more pronounced on the edges and intensifies with direct light and cold.
This variety is well suited to autumn sowing, from late August to October, as well as classic spring sowing: cool weather favours red colour development and slows bolting.
It prefers cool, organically rich soil with regular watering but no waterlogging. In autumn it tolerates moderate temperature swings well; in summer it should be protected from the strongest midday sun to avoid bitterness.
For the deepest red colour, expose plants to full sun during the cooler hours of the day. Repeated cutting of the outer leaves extends production for several weeks.
The main threats are aphids, slugs and downy mildew in high-humidity conditions. Good air circulation between plants and morning watering help prevent leaf rot.
The colour contrast between the bronze-red edges and green centre makes this lettuce highly prized for mixed salads and decorative table arrangements. Young leaves have a slightly sweeter flavour than green varieties.
Rich in anthocyanins and carotenoids, red oak leaf lettuce offers superior antioxidant properties compared to green varieties, plus a good supply of vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, typical of leaf lettuces.
Like other cut-and-come-again lettuces, it's a low-calorie vegetable (about 15 kcal/100g), mostly water, with a fair fibre and potassium content, suitable for light and detox diets.
