Green oak leaf lettuce is one of the most versatile cut-and-come-again lettuces in the garden: deeply lobed leaves, uniform bright green colour, fast growth and suited to successive harvests throughout the season.
A Lactuca sativa var. crispa variety, it forms a loose, light head with no tight heart, thin crunchy leaves that regrow quickly after cutting.
Sow in succession from March to September, every 2-3 weeks, for continuous harvests from spring to early autumn; germinates from 8°C.
Suited to both open ground and pot cultivation on balconies; needs frequent light watering, loose well-drained soil, and partial shade during the hottest months.
Being a cut-and-come-again type, harvest the outer leaves and leave the central heart growing: this allows 3-4 harvests from the same plant over a few weeks.
Watch out for slugs and aphids, especially active in the early growth stages; collar rot can appear with prolonged waterlogging.
The name comes from the leaf shape, which resembles an oak leaf. It's one of the most common cut-and-come-again lettuces in ready-to-eat baby leaf salad mixes.
A source of vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, green oak leaf lettuce has refreshing and mildly diuretic properties typical of fast-growing leaf lettuces.
