Gentile lettuce mix is a blend of gentile-type lettuce seeds ranging from light green to bronze-red, designed to produce an already varicoloured cut-and-come-again salad from a single sowing.
The mix includes several selections of Lactuca sativa var. crispa, gentile type, all sharing a light head and thin, tender leaves, but differing in colour intensity.
Broadcast or row sow from February to September; thanks to the blend of varieties, the different components germinate and grow at very similar rates, ensuring an even harvest.
Grown like individual cut-and-come-again lettuces: cool soil, regular light watering, successive sowings every 2-3 weeks for continuous harvest all season.
Cut-and-come-again harvesting is done when leaves reach 8-10 cm: mixing several varieties in the same bed or plot gives a visually richer result than a single variety.
As with other cut-and-come-again lettuces, the main threats are slugs, aphids and downy mildew in excessively humid conditions.
The mix is ideal for those who want a ready-made composed salad, with a variety of colours, textures and subtle flavour shades in a single harvest.
The different varieties in the mix share a good supply of vitamin A, vitamin K and antioxidants, with the red components particularly rich in anthocyanins.
On average about 14-15 kcal per 100 g, with high water content and a fair fibre and potassium supply, typical of cut-and-come-again lettuces.
