Iceberg Regina dei Ghiacci lettuce is the crunchy head lettuce par excellence: its compact, tightly packed head keeps its unmistakable texture even after refrigeration.
A Lactuca sativa var. capitata variety, iceberg type, it develops a very compact, heavy round head, with crisp white inner leaves protected by tougher outer leaves.
Sow in seedbed from February to July for transplanting, or direct sow from March; forming a compact head requires moderate temperatures, between 15 and 20°C.
Needs regular, consistent watering especially while the head is forming, when water stress can cause leaf scorching; use wide plant spacing to favour head development.
Harvest when the head feels firm to the touch; excess heat before harvest can cause premature bolting, compromising head firmness.
The compact head is more prone to internal rot in excessively humid conditions; also watch for aphids and slugs, especially in the early growth stages.
Thanks to its long shelf life and crisp texture, it's the most widely used lettuce for burgers, sandwiches and salads for transport, keeping its structure even when cut.
High water content and a refreshing effect, with a fair supply of vitamin A and vitamin K, though lower than darker leaf lettuces.
About 14 kcal per 100 g, over 95% water, lower fibre content than other lettuces, but a good potassium supply.
