Lollo bionda lettuce, or light green lollo, is one of the most widely grown cut-and-come-again lettuces in Italy: very curly, frilled leaves, bright light green colour, voluminous light head.
Belongs to Lactuca sativa var. crispa, lollo type: forms an open head with no tight heart, strongly curled leaf edges that increase photosynthetic surface area.
Sow in succession from February to September, with optimal germination between 15 and 20°C; medium-short growing cycle, between 40 and 60 days depending on the season.
Prefers loose, organically rich soil with regular watering; the curled leaf structure tends to trap moisture, so evening leaf wetting should be avoided.
The voluminous head requires wider plant spacing than other cut-and-come-again lettuces; harvest by cutting the whole head at the base or picking outer leaves for repeated harvests.
The curled leaf structure can trap moisture and favour downy mildew; also watch for slugs and aphids.
The name "lollo" refers to the characteristic curling of the leaves. It's one of the most photographed and appreciated varieties for its striking look in the garden and on the plate.
A source of vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, lollo bionda lettuce has refreshing properties and a low calorie content, typical of cut-and-come-again lettuces.
About 14 kcal per 100 g, with over 94% water, a fair fibre and potassium content, suitable for light and low-calorie diets.
