Red lollo lettuce is one of the most striking cut-and-come-again lettuces: strongly curled leaves in deep burgundy-red at the edges, fading to green towards the base, forming a voluminous, light head.
A selection of Lactuca sativa var. crispa, red-leaf lollo type: the head always stays open, with no tight heart, and heavily curled leaves that accumulate anthocyanins as they mature.
Sow from February to September, with optimal germination between 15 and 20°C; the red colour intensifies with late-summer sowings, thanks to cooler temperatures.
Prefers full sun to enhance the red colouring, loose fertile soil, regular watering without wetting the foliage in the evening to prevent rot.
Mild water stress in the final weeks further intensifies the leaves' red colour; cut-and-come-again harvesting allows several yields from the same plant.
Like other lollo types, it's prone to downy mildew in high humidity; slugs and aphids remain the most common pests to monitor.
Widely used to add colour to mixed salads and as a decorative garnish, thanks to the strong colour contrast with green lettuces.
Rich in antioxidant anthocyanins, red lollo lettuce also provides good amounts of vitamin A, vitamin K and folate.
About 15 kcal per 100 g, with over 94% water and a higher antioxidant content compared to equivalent green varieties.
