Green lollo lettuce is the quintessential lollo variety: very curly leaves in intense green, a voluminous light head, among the most widely grown cut-and-come-again lettuces in Italian gardens.
Belongs to Lactuca sativa var. crispa, green lollo type: the head always stays open, with no tight heart, and densely curled leaf edges that increase leaf surface area.
Sow in succession from February to September, with optimal germination between 15 and 20°C; medium-short growing cycle, suited to successive harvests throughout the season.
Grows well in loose, organically rich soil; water in the morning to prevent water from getting trapped between the curly leaves.
The voluminous head requires wide plant spacing; cut-and-come-again harvesting of outer leaves allows several production cycles from the same plant.
The curled leaf structure can trap moisture and favour downy mildew; also watch for slugs and aphids in the early growth stages.
Thanks to its volume and curly texture, it's one of the most widely used lettuces as a decorative base for dishes, as well as a staple in mixed salad blends.
A source of vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, green lollo lettuce has refreshing properties and a very low calorie content.
About 14 kcal per 100 g, with over 94% water, good fibre and potassium content, suitable for light diets.
