Also known as the Marvel cultivar, this red romaine lettuce stands out for its upright, compact habit, crisp smooth ribs tinged with wine-red, and excellent resistance to bolting during hot weather.
It belongs to the longifolia group of lettuces (Lactuca sativa, family Asteraceae), with an elongated upright head and fleshy central ribs; the base green colour is enriched with decorative wine-red shading.
Sow from February to September, in a protected seedbed during colder months or directly in the field in spring and summer, transplanting after about 4 weeks.
A hardy, adaptable crop that tolerates both spring and autumn transplanting as well as summer sowing; it prefers cool, well-drained soils with regular watering for even head development.
Thanks to its hardiness and resistance to overmaturity, it offers wide harvest flexibility even during summer, keeping the voluminous, well-formed head crisp and high quality.
It shows good natural resistance to downy mildew (Bremia), a common fungus in vegetable crops; it is still worth monitoring aphids and slugs, especially in the young plant stage.
Lettuces were already known to the ancient Egyptians and grown by the Romans since the time of Pliny; today the red variant enriches mixed salads with cherry tomatoes and sweetcorn, adding colour and crunch.
Red-leaved lettuces are very low in calories and rich in carotenoids, iron, potassium and vitamins A, B2 and C; their fibre content helps support healthy digestion.
Per 100 grams, red romaine lettuce provides about 18 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 2.5 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.7 g fibre, with a good content of potassium and vitamin A.
