The Pandora golden onion is a modern round-bulb cultivar, valued by growers for its highly uniform shape and good yield in the home vegetable garden.
Allium cepa Pandora belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. It produces a regular spherical bulb, with bronze-golden outer skins and firm white flesh, offering a balanced flavour between sweetness and pungency.
Sowing takes place in a seedbed from January to March for spring transplanting, or in the field in late summer for autumn sowings, burying seeds 1-2 centimetres deep.
A hardy, reliable variety, it adapts well to different soil types provided they are well-drained; it requires regular watering in the early stages and periodic hoeing to control weeds.
Harvesting takes place once the foliage begins to bend and yellow, generally in midsummer; it is best to let the bulbs cure in the sun for a few days before storing.
Like other onions, it can be subject to downy mildew and neck rot in waterlogged conditions; common pests include onion fly and thrips.
Thanks to its good storage qualities and balanced flavour, it is a versatile kitchen variety, suited to both raw consumption and long cooking such as sautéing and stewing.
Like other golden onions, it is rich in quercetin and sulphur compounds with antioxidant properties, plus a good vitamin C and potassium content.
Per 100 grams, Pandora golden onion provides about 31 kcal, 1.1 g protein, 7 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 4.3 g), 0.1 g fat and 1.4 g fibre. It has a good vitamin C content (about 6 mg) and potassium (about 138 mg).
