Also known as "long Calabrese onion", the Tropea elongated red onion represents the "red gold of Calabria" in its most striking form, with tapered bulbs that can exceed 15 centimetres.
Allium cepa Tropea elongated belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. Unlike other ecotypes, this variety puts more energy into bulb elongation than width, the result of centuries of selection along the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast.
It is sown in a sheltered seedbed between late summer and early autumn, then young seedlings are transplanted into open ground once they have 4-5 true leaves.
The long growing cycle requires patience: soil must be kept constantly moist but never waterlogged, with frequent hoeing to aid oxygenation of the shallow roots.
It is the last Tropea ecotype to mature, between late June and late July; the late harvest keeps it available fresh at markets well into summer.
Like other onions, it is prone to downy mildew and neck rot in excessively humid conditions; watch also for onion fly and thrips.
Its striking elongated look makes it perfect for the traditional Calabrian braids hung to dry, a preservation method passed down through generations.
Like all Tropea red onions, it is rich in anthocyanins and organic sulphur compounds, with recognised antioxidant and digestive properties.
Per 100 grams, Tropea elongated red onion provides about 33 kcal, 1.1 g protein, 7.5 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 4.9 g), 0.1 g fat and 1.4 g fibre. It has a good vitamin C content (about 7 mg) and potassium (about 143 mg).
