Also known as "giant white June onion", the white Musona onion is a traditional Italian variety characterised by its particularly bulky bulb and distinctive ivory colour.
Allium cepa Musona belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. It stands out for its vegetative vigour and ability to develop remarkably large bulbs, with thin ivory-white skins and crisp flesh.
Sowing takes place between August and September in a protected seedbed, with seedlings later transplanted into open ground, spaced apart to favour large bulb development.
To obtain large-calibre bulbs it is important to ensure steady watering and fertile soil, well-worked to depth and free of stones that could hinder growth.
As its popular "June" name suggests, harvesting typically happens in this month, once the large bulbs have fully matured and the foliage bends over.
It can be subject to downy mildew and neck rot in conditions of excessive soil moisture; common pests include onion fly and thrips.
Thanks to its large size, it is particularly suited to recipes calling for whole stuffed baked onions, as well as classic raw or cooked kitchen use.
Like other white onions, it contains sulphur compounds with antibacterial properties and a good flavonoid content, plus a fair amount of vitamin C and potassium.
Per 100 grams, white Musona onion provides about 30 kcal, 1 g protein, 6.9 g carbohydrates (of which sugars about 4.1 g), 0.1 g fat and 1.3 g fibre. It has a good vitamin C content (about 6 mg) and potassium (about 136 mg).
