Red Cuneo Pepper

Red Cuneo pepper, a selection of the Cuneo pepper, has a regular, square-shaped fruit of medium size, with a very meaty inner wall and a bright, intense red exterior at full maturity.

The Red Cuneo pepper Plant

Botanically it is a Capsicum annuum, part of the Solanaceae family. The plant is hardy and vigorous, with dense covering foliage that naturally protects the fruits from sunscald. The fruits generally have 3-4 lobes and flesh up to 11 mm thick.

Like the yellow variant, this red selection also often shows the typical anthocyanin bronzing at the tip, known as the "mustache", a distinctive trait of the Cuneo variety.

How to Sow Red Cuneo pepper

Sowing takes place in a heated seedbed, burying the seeds about 0.5-1 cm deep, from February to May. Transplanting into the field takes place once seedlings have developed a good root system and the risk of late frosts has passed.

How to Grow Red Cuneo pepper

It favors fertile, well-drained, medium-textured soil in a sunny position; light summer shading can help prevent sunscald on the most exposed fruits. It adapts well to both open field and protected cultivation.

Harvest takes place from early July to late October, with an average yield of 4-5 fruits per plant. The thick flesh makes this variety particularly tolerant of water stress.

Tips for Growing Red Cuneo pepper

Regular fertilization, without excess, favors balanced production without overloading the plant. Watering should be kept consistent but without waterlogging, especially during fruit set and fruit sizing.

Diseases and Pests of Red Cuneo pepper

Common pests include aphids, thrips and red spider mite, favored by hot, dry weather. Fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and rot should be prevented with proper watering and ventilation management.

Properties of Red Cuneo pepper

The fruits of this pepper are rich in vitamin C, particularly high in the fully ripe red variant, as well as lycopene and natural antioxidants. Thanks to its thick, meaty flesh, it is ideal both raw in salads and baked or stuffed.
