The Red Bull's Horn Pepper is a conical, elongated variety with smooth skin and a vivid, intense red color at full ripeness. The flesh is firm, thick and boldly flavored, ideal both eaten fresh in salads and cooked, when it releases its full aroma.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant has an upright habit, medium-tall size with short internodes, and stands out for its excellent fruit set, ensuring an abundant and steady yield.
The fruits reach 18-22 cm in length and ripen in about 70-80 days from transplanting, with a medium-early cycle suited to both greenhouse and open-field cultivation.
Sowing takes place in a protected seedbed from January to March, keeping a constant temperature around 20-22°C to encourage even germination. Transplanting outdoors or into pots takes place in April-May, once night temperatures are steadily above 12°C.
The Red Bull's Horn Pepper needs deep, loose soil with good water-holding capacity but well-drained, as the plant is rather delicate and dislikes both waterlogging and strong day-night temperature swings. A sunny position sheltered from wind is ideal.
As the plants grow, they can reach considerable heights, so staking with canes or netting is necessary to prevent them from breaking under the weight of the fruits. Watering should stay regular but not excessive.
Harvest when the fruits have reached their full vivid red color, cutting them cleanly to avoid damaging the plant. A base organic fertilization with well-rotted manure or compost supports the plant throughout its long production cycle.
The plant can be affected by fungal diseases such as downy mildew, fusarium, powdery mildew and alternaria, which cause rot in both plant and fruit: in organic growing, copper-based treatments can help, promptly removing any diseased plants. Among the most troublesome pests are aphids, red spider mites and pyralid moths, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates.
The Red Bull's Horn Pepper is rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene and natural antioxidants, with a good potassium content and low calorie count. It is a digestible, mineral-rich vegetable, excellent both raw in fresh salads and cooked.
