The Bunch Chili Pepper produces smooth, conical fruits of 4-6 cm, arranged in characteristic upward-facing bunches, starting green and turning intense, bright red at full ripeness. Thanks to its vivid colors and eye-catching arrangement, it is perfect both for flavoring dishes and as an ornamental plant.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant is low-growing and very compact, with an upright, bushy habit, particularly well suited to container growing as well as garden borders and beds.
Its heat level sits around 25,000 Scoville units, a distinct but manageable level typical of Italian bunch-type varieties.
Protected sowing takes place in February-March, while outdoor sowing can be done in April-May, with a minimum temperature of at least 18°C. Transplanting takes place once the risk of late frosts has passed.
The Bunch Chili Pepper prefers fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny position. Despite its upright, bushy habit, a small stake is useful to support the main stem, especially during the production phase when the fruits weigh down the branches.
Excessively high temperatures can cause flower and fruit drop: in such cases it helps to manage irrigation carefully and, if possible, choose a slightly more sheltered exposure.
Harvest takes place from July to October, once the fruits have reached their characteristic intense red color. Planting basil nearby helps naturally protect the plants from pests, a method well established among chili pepper growers.
Like other chili pepper varieties, it can be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates, and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Bunch Chili Pepper is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, with natural antibacterial properties. The capsaicin responsible for its heat can also aid digestion when consumed in moderation.
