The Long Cayenne Chili Pepper produces long, thin fruits, 14-16 cm long, with smooth flesh, starting green and turning bright, vivid red at full ripeness. It is the classic variety behind the famous Cayenne pepper, prized for centuries for its intense heat and lingering aroma.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant has an upright, vigorous habit, capable of exceeding one meter in height, with short internodes and vivid green leaves.
Its heat level ranges between 30,000 and 50,000 Scoville units, remaining high even in the green fruit stage and during colder months.
Protected sowing takes place in February-March, while outdoor sowing can be done in April-May, with a minimum temperature of at least 18°C. Field transplanting takes place between March and July, and in greenhouse between September and February.
The Long Cayenne Chili Pepper prefers permeable, deep and fertile soil, rich in well-decomposed organic matter, in a sunny position. Recommended transplanting distances are 80-100 cm between rows and 40-50 cm along the row.
Drip irrigation is preferable to avoid wetting the leaves, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.
Harvest takes place about 100 days after transplanting, once the fruits have reached their characteristic bright red color. It is an ideal chili to sun-dry for preparing hot paprika, chili oil, or to be ground and stored as powder.
Like other chili pepper varieties, it can be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates, and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Long Cayenne Chili Pepper is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, with natural antibacterial properties. The capsaicin responsible for its heat can also aid digestion when consumed in moderation.
