The Square Yellow Pepper is a medium-long yellow-type hybrid that produces regular fruits of about 15x8 cm, with 3-4 lobes and an average weight around 350 g. The color turns from dark green to bright yellow at full ripeness, with thick, sweet-tasting flesh.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant is vigorous and compact, with abundant, well-covering foliage that effectively shields the fruits from direct sunlight.
It is a very productive variety, suitable for both greenhouse and open field cultivation.
Protected sowing takes place in February-March, while field transplanting occurs in April-May, once the risk of late frosts has passed. In greenhouse conditions, cultivation can be started earlier.
The Square Yellow Pepper prefers fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny position. Thanks to its abundant, well-covering foliage, the plant naturally protects the fruits from sunscald, reducing the risk of skin damage.
Given its high productivity, a good supply of organic matter and regular irrigation during fruit swelling are recommended.
Harvest takes place about 70 days after transplanting, when the fruits are still dark green, or full ripeness can be awaited for the bright yellow color. Its thick, sweet flesh makes it versatile in the kitchen, excellent both raw and cooked.
Like other pepper varieties, it can be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates, and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Square Yellow Pepper is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, with natural antioxidant properties. Its thick flesh makes it particularly nutritious and filling compared to other varieties.
