The Lido Square Red Pepper is a selection of the large-fruited square type, with meaty, sweet flesh that turns from green to intense red at full ripeness. It is among the most valued square varieties for fruit uniformity and yield.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant is vigorous and well-structured, with good foliage coverage that protects the fruits as they develop, ensuring excellent uniformity of shape and color.
Protected sowing takes place between February and March, while field transplanting occurs in April-May, once the risk of late frosts has passed.
The Lido Square Red Pepper prefers fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny position. It adapts well to both protected tunnel cultivation and open field growing, thanks to the plant's robustness.
Balanced fertilization and regular irrigation promote the development of the thick flesh typical of this pepper type.
Harvest generally takes place between June and August, once the fruits have reached their characteristic intense red color. Thanks to its thick, meaty flesh, it is perfect both raw and cooked, ideal for stuffed peppers or gratins.
Like other pepper varieties, it can be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates, and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Lido Square Red Pepper is rich in vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, phosphorus and potassium, with natural antioxidant properties that make it a valuable vegetable for everyday nutrition.
