The Casanova Square Green Pepper is a square-fruited variety, large and meaty, typically harvested at the green stage but perfectly edible. It is among the most voluminous and early sweet peppers, with four characteristic lobes at the base of the fruit.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant is vigorous and productive, resistant to the most common diseases, with good foliage coverage that protects the fruits as they develop.
Protected sowing takes place between February and March, while field transplanting occurs in April-May, once the risk of late frosts has passed.
The Casanova Square Green Pepper prefers fertile, well-fertilized soil, in a sunny position. Periodic fertilization throughout the growing cycle is recommended to achieve an abundant, uniform yield.
Being an early and voluminous variety, it benefits from regular irrigation, especially during fruit swelling.
Harvest typically takes place at the green stage, once the fruit has reached its characteristic size, while remaining perfectly edible and flavorful. If left on the plant, it gradually turns red at full ripeness.
The variety is generally resistant to the most common pepper diseases. Like other varieties, it can still be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates, and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Casanova Square Green Pepper is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, with natural antioxidant properties. Green pepper has a slightly higher cellulose content than ripe varieties, but remains a fresh and light vegetable.
