The Linares Red Pepper is a "Giant of China" type hybrid that produces elongated square-shaped fruits, weighing about 380 g, 16-18 cm long and 8-9 cm wide. At full ripeness it turns bright red, with thick, sweet-tasting flesh.
Its botanical name is Capsicum annuum, belonging to the Solanaceae family. The plant is robust, with a semi-upright habit, and is naturally resistant to viruses as well as offering outstanding resistance to nematodes.
Protected sowing takes place between February and March, while field transplanting can occur from March to June, once the risk of late frosts has passed.
The Linares Red Pepper prefers fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny position. It benefits from abundant fertilization, particularly right after transplanting, to support the plant's vegetative vigor.
It is advisable to remove the first fruits produced while still small, to encourage more uniform development of subsequent fruits.
Harvest takes place once the fruits have reached their characteristic bright red color. Thanks to its thick flesh and sweet flavor, it is ideal pan-cooked or grilled, as well as eaten fresh.
The variety is naturally resistant to viruses and offers outstanding resistance to nematodes. Like other pepper varieties, it can still be subject to attacks by aphids and red spider mites, controllable with natural garlic or nettle macerates. Good soil drainage and crop rotation, avoiding repeated Solanaceae cultivation on the same plot for several consecutive years, are important preventive measures.
The Linares Red Pepper is rich in nutrients and particularly vitamins, with natural antioxidant properties that make it a valuable vegetable for everyday nutrition.
