Nozomi cabbage is a round-headed variety with bright green colour, prized for its remarkable resistance to splitting and good field productivity.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. capitata, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The head is flattened-round in shape and medium-sized, firm, with an average weight of 1.5 to 2 kg. The outer foliage is glossy green.
Sowing is generally done in a seedbed, with later transplanting into the open field once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves. It prefers cool, humid areas free from frost.
The optimal growing temperature is 15-18°C, with a minimum of 9-10°C. For better water management, drip irrigation with perforated tubing is recommended, avoiding wetting the foliage and reducing plant health issues: this group of plants needs consistent soil moisture throughout the growing cycle.
Ensure regular, consistent watering throughout the growing cycle to promote a firm, compact head. Respect transplanting distances for good airflow between plants and to reduce the risk of fungal disease.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars and aphids. Good airflow between plants and crop rotation help prevent the main fungal diseases typical of this family.
Cabbage is rich in minerals, fibre, iron and vitamins A, C, B1 and B2. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying properties, supports the immune system and helps lower blood pressure. It can be eaten raw in healthy salads or cooked, for example Sicilian-style stewed.
