Tourmaline F1 Savoy cabbage is a very late, highly productive variety, with round, compact heads, green blistered leaves, and resistance to splitting and frost.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. sabauda, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The plant is hardy, with good vegetative vigour and a semi-upright habit. The head is compact, round and heavy, bright medium-dark green in colour, with fine blistering, and an average weight of 1.5-2.0 kg.
The growing cycle is very long, around 150-160 days from transplanting, and harvest is recommended in February and March, making it suited to late-winter harvests.
A hardy variety with excellent tolerance to bacterial disease and resistance to low temperatures, it adapts well to prolonged growing into late season without losing quality.
Given the length of the growing cycle, plan a good base fertilisation programme and consistent watering, especially during head formation.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars and aphids. Its excellent tolerance to bacterial disease (Xanthomonas) is a significant advantage for this variety.
Savoy cabbage is known for its therapeutic properties and can also be eaten raw; in the kitchen it is mostly used to prepare soups, stews, or to wrap other dishes in its leaves.
