Deaton red Savoy cabbage has a distinctive reddish-purple colour, with spherical heads, light green interior, and large, smooth but slightly blistered leaves.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. sabauda, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). This is a long-cycle, highly productive variety, with a compact spherical head and an intense reddish-purple exterior colouring.
Given the length of the growing cycle, sowing should be planned well ahead of the desired harvest, preferring a well-worked, sunny seedbed.
Deaton cabbage needs adequate space for the development of its spherical head and a constant water supply, especially during head formation.
Take good care of the base fertilisation, rich in organic matter, to support the long cycle and promote the development of its characteristic reddish-purple colour.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars, aphids and flea beetles; it is useful to monitor plants especially in the early stages of growth.
Red Savoy cabbage is rich in anthocyanins, the same pigments that give it its purple colour, along with the antioxidant properties typical of Brassicaceae.
