Canestrino di Lucca Tomato

Canestrino di Lucca tomato is an ancient Tuscan variety, grown for over a century in family gardens around Lucca and listed in the Tuscany Region Biodiversity Register since 2015.

The Canestrino Tomato Plant

It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate-growth plant with widely spaced trusses; fruits are pear-shaped on the lower trusses and become ribbed higher up, with a characteristic green colour persisting near the stem.

How to Sow Canestrino Tomato

Sow in a heated seedbed from February to June, with soil temperature between 20 and 25°C; transplant into the field after the last frosts.

How to Grow Canestrino Tomato

It is grown only vertically, staked on canes or wire, and requires more care than other varieties; it prefers fertile, well-drained soil with regular watering.

Tips for Canestrino Tomato

Harvest at full ripeness, when it holds well on the plant for several days; summer heat and drought can cause small surface cracks, considered a distinctive trait of the variety.

Diseases and Pests of Canestrino Tomato

It can be affected by downy mildew, alternaria and blossom-end rot in case of irregular watering; crop rotation and good ventilation help prevent the main plant diseases.

Uses and Curiosities of Canestrino Tomato

Thanks to its low water content and firm flesh, it is excellent fully ripe in salads, but also for fresh sauces, preserves and even freezing.

Properties of Canestrino Tomato

Rich in lycopene, vitamin C and potassium, canestrino tomato has antioxidant properties and a sweet flavour thanks to its high sugar content and low acidity.
