Chocolate cherry tomato is a variety with a distinctive coppery-brown colour, producing large berries for a cherry type, with tender flesh and a sweet, low-acid flavour.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A vigorous, indeterminate plant capable of producing abundant clusters throughout the season.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping the soil between 20 and 25°C; transplant between April and May once frost risk has passed.
It thrives in very sunny positions, with at least 6-8 hours of direct light a day, fertile well-drained soil; it needs sturdy stakes and regular watering to sustain its abundant fruit production.
Harvest is staggered from July until the first autumn frosts; the berries, which can exceed 800 g per cluster, should be picked once they reach their typical chocolate-brown colouring.
It can be affected by alternaria, downy mildew and blossom-end rot in case of irregular watering; crop rotation and good ventilation between plants help prevent them.
Its sweet flavour and low acidity make it perfect for raw consumption in salads, but also for appetisers and raw dishes where the dark colour creates a striking visual impact.
Rich in lycopene, antioxidants and vitamin C, chocolate tomato has beneficial properties for the immune system and cardiovascular health.
