The original date tomato is the historic elongated-fruit variety that gave rise to the date tomato type, with small, very sweet berries and firm flesh typical of tomatoes from Puglia.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate, highly productive plant, with long clusters and numerous fruits.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, with soil temperature between 20 and 25°C; transplant into the field between April and May.
It prefers a very sunny position and fertile, well-drained soil; it needs sturdy staking to support the long clusters and regular watering to develop its typical sweetness.
Harvest is staggered from July to September, preferably as whole clusters when the fruits reach a uniform bright red colour.
It can be affected by downy mildew and blossom-end rot under irregular watering; crop rotation and good ventilation help prevent the main plant diseases.
Its sweet, firm flesh makes it perfect for raw consumption in salads, but it is also highly valued for quick sauces and preserves thanks to its concentration of sugars.
Rich in lycopene, vitamin C and potassium, date tomato has antioxidant properties that promote overall wellbeing.
